Cop or criminal
- The split exists only in Looty Bay. Every time you drive in you pick cop or criminal — or look around first. In the desert there are no cops at all.
- As a criminal you’re a civilian until you put on a mask; before that you can scout targets and escape routes safely.
How cops work
| Gear | State-issued standard gear and a basic vehicle; Police Badges unlock top-tier equipment |
| Pay | A cut of confiscated goods, arrests, bribes — “their paycheck comes directly out of confiscated items” |
| Risk | Cops don’t risk their own equipment on shift → lower earning potential |
| Respawn | In Looty Bay; longer delay after each consecutive death (since Nov 4) |
What changed at launch (Nov 4)
- Cops can buy police badges; the selection depends on their home district.
- Badges from looting and salaries were significantly reduced.
- On a fresh server, patrol cops only get pistols; better gear unlocks as the server gets older.
- Cop respawn time increased, with extra delay per consecutive death.
Nov 5 balance patch and pay numbers ⚠️
Not on Steam news, but consistent across fan data, a players’ guide and a launch-week video (patch notes):
- At most 4 cops per city. When there’s a free slot, random civilians get an invite; accepting gives a bonus.
- Pistols-only for the first 30 minutes of a fresh server.
- Pay mostly in cash: only 25% comes as items (keys, badges, gear).
- Earnings (game-file data): about 9,000–15,000 per arrest, 2,000 per criminal killed plus a 5,000 kill wage. An older guide quotes 7,000–12,000 per arrest, probably from before the Nov 5 raise.
- Badges: sergeant 8,000, lieutenant 40,000, captain 100,000; 10 sergeant badges barter into a lieutenant’s (one source says 15).
- Selling confiscated items means going criminal — players complain that cop income has to be fenced and laundered like anyone else’s.
Dealing with cops as a criminal
- Surrender if you’re caught: cops only confiscate your bag; your equipped gear stays.
- Notoriety rises the longer your crime spree in Looty Bay lasts: better loot and payouts, but more risk.
- Kefir’s advice (Nov 1): read the map, plan routes, use lockpicks and avoid alarms that bring the whole precinct down. “That goes double for lone wolves.”
